ACT Therapy

What is ACT Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps you develop a more flexible and compassionate relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Rather than trying to eliminate or avoid discomfort, ACT teaches you how to make space for what you are feeling, remain present, and choose actions that reflect your personal values. It can support people experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, trauma-related distress, and other emotional challenges by strengthening mindfulness, self-compassion, emotional resilience, and a greater sense of meaning and choice.

ACT has been studied extensively and is recognized as an evidence-based treatment, particularly for depression. Research has shown that it can reduce emotional distress, improve psychological flexibility, and help people become more engaged in relationships and activities that matter to them. ACT-based strategies are also used to address anxiety and trauma-related difficulties, although ACT is not currently considered a first-line trauma-focused treatment for PTSD. Because each person’s needs are unique, ACT is most effective when provided by a trained therapist and thoughtfully tailored to your goals, values, preferences, and readiness for change.
