Trauma Informed Approach

A trauma-informed approach recognizes that past or ongoing experiences may influence how you think, feel, respond, and relate to others—even when trauma is not the primary reason you are seeking therapy. Rather than asking, “What is wrong with you?” a trauma-informed therapist considers, “What may have happened to you, and how have you learned to cope?” This perspective creates space for your experiences to be understood with compassion rather than judgment.

Trauma-informed therapy emphasizes emotional and physical safety, trust, collaboration, choice, and empowerment. Your therapist works with you at a pace that feels manageable, clearly explains the therapeutic process, respects your boundaries, and involves you in decisions about your care. This can reduce the risk of feeling overwhelmed or retraumatized while helping you develop a greater sense of stability, control, and confidence.

A trauma-informed approach can strengthen many forms of mental health treatment, including therapy for anxiety, depression, grief, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. By understanding the possible roots of emotional distress and honoring the ways you have adapted to difficult experiences, therapy can support deeper healing, self-compassion, resilience, and meaningful change.
